Project Description

Waymo Driver HW diagram
Diagram showing the placement of our fifth-generation hardware on one of our vehicle platforms. Hardware includes lidar (360 lidar and perimeter lidar), cameras (360 vision system, perimeter vision system, and peripheral vision system), and radar. These sensors work together to paint a complete picture of the world, 360 degrees around the vehicle, and enable the Waymo Driver to navigate roads safely.

Waymo Driver vehicle identifier
The roof pod or dome on our vehicles includes our 360 lidar, 360 vision system, and long range cameras. We’ve added moving LEDs to our 360 lidar, so that it can include both Waymo branding as well as personal identification symbols, and act as a mechanism for customers to identify the vehicle and know which vehicle is theirs when there are multiple Waymo vehicles in one place.

Waymo Driver trunk ghost
We’ve worked to make our high-tech product equally human-centered. Our designers collaborated with the Waymo engineering team to develop a compute (the “brain” of the Driver) that was superior in performance, but also small enough to offer riders ample trunk space to bring their belongings with them on their ride. Here you can see how the compute system (outlined in lighter gray) was packaged underneath the trunk in our latest vehicle platform.

Waymo Driver trunk wheelchair
The trunk space can fit everything from groceries, two full-sized suitcases, folding wheelchairs, golf clubs, and more.

Waymo Driver vehicle platforms
The fifth-generation Waymo Driver can be applied across a number of different vehicle platforms, from SUVs and minivans to Class 8 trucks, and power multiple use cases, from ride-hailing to trucking and delivery to personal car ownership.
