Tapio Anttila
(b. 1962) is a versatile freelance designer based in Lahti, Finland. Anttila works extensively in the fields of product design, concept design and interior architecture. He is particularly interested in Finnish wood and the modern ways of working with it, whilst still respecting tradition. In furniture design, he focuses on functional pieces for the home and public spaces.
After years of working as an in-house designer, Anttila established his own business ‘Design Studio Tapio Anttila’ in 2005. Anttila’s clients include numerous Finnish companies and also Italian companies such as Riva 1920. His products has been available in design stores throughout Finland and around the world, for instance at the MOMA Design Store in New York.
Recent developments in Tapio Anttilas career include the ‘Tapio Anttila Collection’, his own product concept, and a colabotration with the finest Chinese furniture brands together with Finnish designer Jonas Hakaniemi under brand ‘Anttila & Hakaniemi’.
Anttila’s designs have received several high-profile
international design awards, including twenty one Good Design awards for various products, three Green Good Design awards and two EcoDesign awards for sustainable design. In 2012 Anttila was awarded the Furniture Designer of the Year by Ornamo, the Finnish Association of Designers, and in 2018 Kaj Franck Design Prize by Design Forum Finland.
The ecological aspects of design are the core values for Tapio Anttila. Simplicity, aesthetic form, language and functionality are the best words to describe his designs - and not forgetting subtle humor.
